Does DoorDash Deliver for Walmart? (Yes, but not everywhere)

The ability to shop for groceries online can be life-changing, particularly if you have kids. Instarcart sometimes marks up store prices, leading some shoppers to wonder does DoorDash deliver for Walmart?

I looked into it and found that:

Yes, DoorDash does deliver from Walmart, currently in 46 states in the US. Unlike Instacart, they do not charge more than the store price, and Walmart recommends not tipping drivers. So on top of Walmart’s low prices, DoorDash can save you money compared to other grocery delivery companies.

But there’s more to know about DoorDash, Walmart, and what the pros and cons are of using this system. So let’s keep going!

Between chauffeuring kids to and from school, sporting events, and birthday parties, life can get pretty hectic.

So you’ve started turning to grocery delivery services to make life just a little easier. You’ve heard about DoorDash, but you prefer to get your groceries from Walmart. And you have some questions.

How do I get groceries delivered from Walmart? Is there a price difference when it comes to using DoorDash versus grocery pickup?

Just keep reading to find out!

How does DoorDash work with Walmart?

Walmart introduced its grocery pickup service to a very small market in 2015. They expanded it nationwide in 2017. Then, they made grocery shopping even more convenient in 2018 with the introduction of grocery delivery services.

Having groceries delivered via DoorDash and Walmart is super easy.

Just shop via the Walmart Grocery app or using Walmart’s grocery shopping link, grocery.walmart.com.

Fill up your cart, checkout, and select a delivery time. Walmart’s personal shoppers will pull your items and bag them up. A Dasher will then deliver your order to your doorstep during the delivery window you selected.

Easy peasy.

Walmart does charge for the delivery service via the Delivery Unlimited service. It’s $12.95 per month or $98 per year. They also impose a minimum order fee of $35.

If you don’t want to pay the Delivery Unlimited service fee, there is a delivery fee of $9.95 per order.

If you use the delivery service often, it makes the $98 per year fee well worth it. Even twice a month makes the Delivery Unlimited service worth the price.

If you are unsure of whether Delivery Unlimited is beneficial for you, they often have a free trial period available.

In what states does DoorDash deliver from Walmart?

Typically, DoorDash works with fast-food restaurants to deliver food.

However, in 2018, DoorDash partnered with Walmart to provide grocery delivery services. It is currently available in 46 states, and it consistently expanding.

Currently, Walmart does NOT offer delivery services in:

  • Alaska
  • Hawaii
  • Maine
  • Vermont

But they are always expanding. To see a list of cities that support Walmart Grocery Delivery, click here.

They offer grocery pickup at more than 3,000 stores, and at the end of 2019, offered delivery at 1,400 stores. I wouldn’t be surprised if they expanded their delivery service even more in 2020.

Walmart’s overall goal is to make grocery shopping at Walmart the easiest and most valuable place to shop. By having their pickup service available for free and their delivery service available in more markets, they are quickly making that a reality. source

You can get your groceries delivered to you as early as the same day. Other grocery delivery services, like Instacart, claim to deliver your groceries as early as one hour. Currently, Instacart does not work with Walmart.

Do you tip the DoorDash delivery driver?

Yes.

DoorDash drivers are providing a service. They are making your life easier and saving you hours of shopping time. Certainly, that is worth something to you.

Like many other folks in the service industry, a large amount of their pay comes from tips.

So, not only do drivers rely on tips to make a decent living, but they also use their own personal vehicles and gas to pick up and deliver your groceries.

At the end of the day, though, it is up to you whether or not you tip your driver. If you do decide to tip, DoorDash recommends that you tip 15-20% for food delivery.

However, delivery from Walmart is slightly different. When you order fast food to be delivered to your house, chances are, it’s not going to cost as much as having groceries delivered, so the final amount tipped can be really high.

Walmart says that it’s not necessary to tip your driver, but drivers are paid between $7 to $11 per hour. Again, they also use their own vehicle. (source)

Your tip should reflect how much you value the service of having your groceries dropped at your doorstep.

Instacart recommends tipping drivers 5% when they deliver your groceries.

So that is probably a good comparison. To read more about Instantcart delivery, read this recent article where I go into all the details that make Instacart such an in-demand service. But I also talk about why they mark up the store’s prices for some stores and not others.

Not only are Instacart drivers doing the shopping, but they are bringing you your groceries. In certain areas, they can even bring them to you in an hour or less!

Does DoorDash markup prices from Walmart?

No.

In fact, Walmart specifically states there are no price markups. DoorDash doesn’t actually do the shopping, though. Walmart’s personal shoppers do the shopping and then a DoorDash “Dasher” retrieves the order from the store to deliver it to your door. (source)

Instacart, on the other hand, charges more for certain stores, but sometimes there isn’t any added markup fee at all. It depends on which store you’re shopping at. They do not deliver for Walmart.

There was a recent outrage because customers found out that the average markup is just that: an average. Instacart holds the right to raise prices higher than the quoted percentage.

Keep in mind that it doesn’t affect all stores. However, it’s still something to remember when you’re considering using the service to replace your shopping altogether.

The best way to know whether or not you’ll be charged more at a specific store is by reviewing Instacart’s pricing information page.

According to that page, it’s the retailers themselves that set the prices charged through Instacart.

Don’t let the potentially higher prices steer you away from the app, though. Instacart is a thriving business for many reasons.

The convenience value alone is enough to make the markups well worth using the service. There’s certainly a line where it’s probably a better idea to do your own shopping. Still, it all depends on the markup percentage.
